What is a Competency Demonstration Report (CDR)?

A Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) is a technical document required by Engineers Australia for engineers seeking skilled migration under non-accredited qualification pathways.

It is the central document of Engineers Australia’s Migration Skills Assessment (MSA), and it determines whether your engineering education and experience meet the Australian standard for your nominated occupation.

If your qualification is recognised under the Washington, Sydney, or Dublin Accord, you may apply via an accredited pathway and skip the CDR. Otherwise, the CDR is your route to Engineers Australia approval, and from there, to a skilled migration visa.

Who Needs CDR Report Writing in Australia?

You need a CDR if any one of the following applies. Most migrant engineers tick multiple boxes.

Most Common Non-Accord countries we work with most often:
🇮🇳 India
🇵🇰 Pakistan
🇳🇵 Nepal
🇧🇩 Bangladesh
🇱🇰 Sri Lanka
🇪🇬 Egypt
🇮🇷 Iran
🇵🇭 Philippines
🇮🇩 Indonesia
🇻🇳 Vietnam
🇳🇬 Nigeria
🇰🇪 Kenya
01

Non-Accord Country Qualification

Your engineering degree is from a country outside the Washington, Sydney, or Dublin Accords. Most engineers from South Asia, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Africa fall into this group.

02

Provisional Accreditation

Your qualification is provisionally accredited by Engineers Australia rather than fully accredited, common for newer institutions or recently-renamed programmes.

03

Different Target Occupation

You hold a qualification from an Accord country, but you’re applying for a different engineering occupation than your degree was issued for. EA treats this as a non-accredited application.

04

General Skilled Migration

You’re applying under GSM, visa subclasses 189, 190, or 491, and need a positive skills assessment outcome letter before lodging your Expression of Interest.

05

Engineering Manager Applications (ANZSCO 133211)

You’re applying as an Engineering Manager. These applications also require a Relevant Skilled Employment Assessment (RSEA) alongside the standard CDR. We prepare both.

Process

How CDR Report Guide Prepares Your Competency Demonstration Report

Our writing process is built around the assessment criteria Engineers Australia actually uses. Six steps, in order:

1

Free consultation and ANZSCO selection

We start with a 15-minute call to understand your engineering background, projects, and migration target. Most CDR rejections trace back to a wrong ANZSCO occupation choice. We recommend the right code based on your duties, not your job title.

2

Discipline-matched writer assignment

Your assigned writer is an engineer in your own discipline. A civil engineering CDR is written by a civil engineer working in Australia. A petroleum CDR by a petroleum engineer. It’s the only way the technical content of your Career Episodes reads as authentic.

3

Project and Career Episode mapping

From your work history and academic background we identify three suitable engineering activities. Each Career Episode must describe a distinct project, demonstrate complex engineering activity, and evidence different competency elements from the others.

4

Drafting against the MSA Booklet 2026

Every paragraph of every Career Episode is anchored to a specific competency element it evidences. The Summary Statement that links them is built alongside, not as an afterthought.

5

Compliance and plagiarism review

Each CDR passes through a senior engineer compliance check, a Turnitin similarity scan, and a separate AI-content detection pass. Engineers Australia’s 2026 detection routines flag both copied text and AI-generated content, so this stage is non-negotiable.

6

Final delivery and revisions

You receive your finished CDR with the Turnitin similarity report attached. Revisions are unlimited, until Engineers Australia returns a positive Awarded outcome.

Testimonials

Engineers We’ve Helped Migrate to Australia

Real outcomes from real engineers across disciplines and countries of origin.

I’d been rejected once before by Engineers Australia for plagiarism on a self-written CDR. CDR Report Guide rewrote my three Career Episodes from scratch and walked me through the Summary Statement cross-referencing. Awarded outcome on the second attempt.
Rohan M.Civil Engineer · ANZSCO 233211 · India → Sydney · 2025
The Premium package made sense for me. I had a 90-day visa lodgement window and couldn’t risk a delay. The writer was a mechanical engineer himself, asked good questions about my projects, and the report came back in nine days. Positive outcome from EA in seven weeks.
Faisal A.Mechanical Engineer · ANZSCO 233512 · Pakistan → Melbourne · 2025
I’m a software engineer, but I have a Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering. The team helped me understand which pathway was right, turned out an ACS RPL was wrong for me, and a CDR with 233311 Electrical Engineer was the right call. Approved on first attempt.
Priya S.Electrical Engineer · ANZSCO 233311 · India → Brisbane · 2024
Got my KA02 done with them for Engineering NZ. They knew the Knowledge Profile elements cold and matched my work samples to each one. CPEng pathway is now open.
Mahesh K.Structural Engineer · ANZSCO 233214 · Nepal → Auckland · 2024
Adjacent Pathways

Other Skills Assessment Pathways We Support

Not every migrant engineer needs a CDR. We also prepare reports for adjacent assessing bodies.

ACS RPL →

If you’re a software engineer, developer, systems analyst, network engineer or another ICT professional without a recognised ICT qualification, your skills assessment runs through the Australian Computer Society. The ACS RPL report consists of two Project Reports plus the Key Areas of Knowledge section mapped to the ACS Core Body of Knowledge.

KA02 Report →

For engineers migrating to New Zealand without a Washington Accord–accredited qualification, the Knowledge Assessment KA02 report demonstrates equivalence to a Washington Accord engineering degree through 3–4 work samples mapped to Engineering NZ’s 12-element Knowledge Profile.

Other assessing bodies (consultation only)

We provide guidance on VETASSESS, Trades Recognition Australia (TRA), and the National Engineering Register (NER) where these apply alongside an EA application, though we do not write VETASSESS or TRA reports directly.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions migrant engineers ask us most often.

What is a CDR for Engineers Australia?
A Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) is the technical document Engineers Australia uses to assess whether an engineer’s qualifications and experience meet the Australian standard for their nominated occupation. It contains three Career Episodes describing distinct engineering activities, a Summary Statement cross-referencing each episode to specific competency elements, and a Continuing Professional Development list. Engineers without Washington, Sydney or Dublin Accord–accredited qualifications must submit a CDR through the Migration Skills Assessment process before applying for a skilled migration visa.
How long does it take to write a CDR?
A standard CDR takes our team between 5 and 21 days depending on the package selected. Our Essential package delivers in 21 days, and our fastest Supreme package delivers in 5 days. The total time from your first consultation to a final report ready for submission to Engineers Australia is typically 15–25 days, including the revision rounds. If your visa lodgement deadline is shorter than five days, contact us, emergency turnaround is sometimes possible.
What’s the cost of a CDR for Engineers Australia?
Professional CDR writing in Australia ranges from AUD 599 to AUD 1,599 depending on delivery speed and review depth. CDR Report Guide pricing is AUD 599 (Essential, 21 days), AUD 679 (Enhanced, 15 days), AUD 1,119 (Premium, 10 days), and AUD 1,599 (Supreme, 5 days). These prices exclude the Engineers Australia assessment fee, which sits at approximately AUD 907.50 and is paid directly to EA. There are no hidden costs and revisions are unlimited.
What happens if my CDR is rejected by Engineers Australia?
If Engineers Australia returns a negative outcome, the path forward depends on the rejection reason. Plagiarism rejections require a full rewrite. Engineers Australia stores every assessed CDR in its database and will detect any subsequent submission containing the same flagged content. Other rejection reasons (insufficient competency evidence, wrong ANZSCO match, weak personal-contribution detail) usually require targeted revision rather than a full rewrite. We support both pathways and will revise CDRs we’ve written at no extra cost.
How many Career Episodes are required?
Engineers Australia requires three Career Episodes in every CDR. Each episode must describe a distinct engineering project, range between 1,000 and 2,500 words, be written in the first person, and demonstrate engineering knowledge and application beyond what was learned in your degree. Using the same project across two Career Episodes is one of the most common rejection reasons. We deliberately select three different engineering activities from your work history.
What’s the word count for each Career Episode?
Each Career Episode must be between 1,000 and 2,500 words. Career Episodes shorter than 1,000 words are typically returned by EA as insufficient evidence of engineering competency. Episodes longer than 2,500 words risk losing the assessor’s focus and triggering questions about which sections demonstrate which competencies. The total CDR Career Episode word count usually lands between 4,500 and 6,500 words across all three episodes combined.
Is hiring a CDR writer legal and safe?
Yes, engaging a professional CDR writing service is legal and widely used by migrant engineers. Engineers Australia’s MSA Booklet does not prohibit professional writing assistance. What is prohibited is plagiarism, submitting work that is not your own. CDR Report Guide writes your Career Episodes based on your own projects, your own work history, and your own technical decisions, captured during a consultation with you. The intellectual content is yours; we structure and articulate it to Engineers Australia’s standards.
What’s the difference between CDR, ACS RPL and KA02?
Three different assessing bodies, three different documents. A CDR goes to Engineers Australia for engineers without Accord-accredited qualifications. An ACS RPL goes to the Australian Computer Society for ICT professionals without recognised ICT qualifications. A KA02 goes to Engineering New Zealand for engineers without Washington Accord qualifications who are migrating to New Zealand. Each has its own structure, word counts, and competency framework. They are not interchangeable.
Can you guarantee Engineers Australia approval?
No legitimate CDR service can guarantee approval. Engineers Australia is the assessing authority and the decision is theirs. What we guarantee is MSA Booklet 2026 alignment, original first-person content, plagiarism verification, and unlimited revisions until you receive a positive outcome. Our 98% first-attempt approval rate across 840+ delivered CDRs reflects this process working, but the final assessment is always Engineers Australia’s call.
How does plagiarism affect Engineers Australia assessment?
Engineers Australia treats plagiarism as automatic grounds for rejection, and in serious cases, a 12-month ban from re-submission. Their detection routines include cross-referencing against an internal database of every previously assessed CDR, scanning against 14+ billion web pages, and, as of 2026, separate detection of AI-generated content from tools like ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. Paraphrasing tools such as Quillbot and Spinbot are not safe. EA’s detection sees through them. The only reliable approach is original engineer-authored content from project-specific source material.
